I spent most of the day but I got it licked.
Wipe the hard drive
restore backup
boot off windows 10 install
select repair
select Troubleshoot
select command prompt
type Bootrec /fixMBR
type Bootrec /fixBOOT
type Bootrec /rebuild BCD

this last command is confusing because it identifies windows as Windows 7 and asks you to select it... because that is what was upgraded from but I kept thinking something was wrong.

Finally reboot off windows 10 install, select repair it will then make the repair reboot and all is well!

Has worked for me in many situations, back in the day drive overlays…

Subject: [H] locked drive

I have a Lenovo Edge laptop with a 500GB Samsung EVO 850 drive
running windows 10 PRO. I stupidly did the Creators update last April
and seance then I haven't been able to get any MS updates or even
download apps from the windows store. Other programs have no problem updating.

I had the same problem on another laptop. I solved that problem by
restoring a backup that was pre creators update. I decided to do the
same thing with the Edge. I did a restore with Acronis and it won't
boot. I couldn't figure out why and, eventually I figured something
must be corrupt in the boot sector so I did a wipe of the entire
drive with Kill disk and, then a Acronis restore but same problem.
Diagnostics report that the drive is locked which is why I can't fix it.

How can I fix this? I need to get this laptop up and, running and I
am prepared to buy another drive if need be. Thanks.
