I'd be surprised if Windows 2000 can be persuaded to run smoothly on
hardware that wasn't released until _after_ Win2k left mainstream support
(SP4 was 2005, Core 2 Duo was 2006)

Is there any particular reason you're not throwing XP at the machine?
