FWIW I have been using a Core i5 750 overclocked to 3 GHz on my Linux box
for several months now and have been happy with the performance.

I'm running web, mail and DNS servers. I also use this machine as a router
and wireless access point. I have never had any performance issues.

I haven't tried gaming on this machine so I can't attest as to whether or
not it would be any good for that.

If you use your computer only for office stuff, web or email then I think
an i5 would be fine.
