Winterlight,
OK. Yes, I would see "receiver;" well, a receiver with preamp out jacks!
I still use the Klipsch P2-400 system. I assume that my PC acts as my
"digital preamp" via its' audio/video logic. I have not kept up with
all the modern digital audio and video formats (datastreams). Wish I
could help; just do not know.

it is a preamp, or it could be in a receiver. In the case of my
speakers, which already have a power amp, all I require is a preamp
that will allow me to switch between sources, and instead of running
straight analog, take the digital signal from the source to my analog
speakers.... at least that is how I understand it.. anybody please
jump in and correct me if I am mistaken.

Is an audio decoder a piece of hardware or some software app?

I am not much of a audiophile, and have little knowledge about such

like to get a decoder that would make it easy to use switch between
my Plasma TV and whatever. I know Kilpsch made one back in 2002, and
they do come up for sale occasionally, but that is 8 year old
technology, and I would think it would be better to get something
more up to date, and less used ... anybody have any recommendations
or advice? Thanks!
