No.   If you have an hd audio codec, only ever use the hd audio header.  Do not 
ever use the ac97 connector on an hd audio connector onboard.   So unless you 
have a very old motherboard, never ever use the ac97 header.. Or the smell of 
wires burning -may- greet you.  Then clip and discard the ac97 header. :).

There are two connections wired together in both my Cooler Master cases  
and one is High Def (I suspect for a 5.1 speaker setup) and the other is  
AC97. On my mobo's I've never gotten the HD connection to work because I  
only use the case connection for my game set (headphone/mic)  so I use  
AC97 and it works fine. I wouldn't cut off either of them if I were you  
because you might regret it down the road. I too don't like the untidy  
look but don't have a side cover window anyway.
