But that assumes that whatever the issue is, it is somehow dependent on disk speed. Given the time involved, it seems much more likely that it is something timing out. Since Windows, especially 7, runs startup tasks in parallel, I very much doubt that the situation would be at all worsened by a magnetic disk.
Frankly, this sounds simple. It sounds like gpclient is trying to talk to the DCs, which eventually just times out. To the OP, is your home network by chance running on the same subnet as work?
