Powerline networking:

netgear should have that AV adapter out soon what will let you drive 4
devices over a powerline connect. 500 rather than 200 Mbps. I current
use the 200 Mbps AV unit here
http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Powerline-Adapter-Ethernet-Switch/dp/B002J9G5XG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1307922563&sr=8-6
but will be upgrading once the 500 Mbps version hits. I also use this:
http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Livewire-Powerline-Network/dp/B003VWY0VY/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1307922563&sr=8-9
works with the netgear stuff too.
I also have 5 Ghz and 2.4 Gghz networks....they work as long as you keep
the distance short...almost direct line of sight...otherwise,
unreliable. My powerline stuff is rock solid.
I cna't say I stream 1080p video, though. I rather play blu-rays. I do
stream netflix in HD, youtube, vimeo, and other stuff over google tv and
tivo. I download stuff from Amazon in HD, but those are real downloads,
not streaming.
I did some file transfers a while back documenting a lot of the speeds I
got...should be in the archives.

Next month we're moving to a new house, one that we will be renting for a

we will have to do it wirelessly
We will be streaming everything from 480p xvid to 1080p Blu Ray rips, but
generally to no more than one device at a time (perhaps worst case two,
although not likely both 1080p). My initial thought is to setup two
separate Wifi networks - one on 5 Ghz dedicated to the HTPCs and media
server, and a separate 2.4 Ghz network for everything else.
Has anyone tried that before and run into problems? I think I can still
have all the devices on both networks on the same LAN as long as they are
all on the same subnet, right?
