[H] DVD Drive Problem

I should have been able to find this, but I'm running into a lot of 
garbage returns in Google.

My DVD drive shows up as working in Device Manager, however, it does not 
show up in Explorer and putting in a disk gets the flashing light, but 
no response from Win7.  Boot-up shows the drive also.  Tried the 
Microsoft Fix-it, but it refused to do anything useful.  In fact it kept 
asking me to insert a disk with the proper format, even though one was 
already in the drive.  I was originally certain it was a hardware 
failure, except for the above.

Anyone have any ideas?  Otherwise I'm going to try replacing the drive 
and see what happens.
