With phone calls you often have to play 'tag' for a while before you actually get to speak to a live person. It ties up two people simultaneously. One party is often more loquacious than the other, which means the other one is bored...
I don't even have a texting plan for my cellphone. Those closest to me know I respond to emails very promptly and thoroughly.
