John,
I tried your link. What a scary walk down a very old memory lane! :)
I did notice the link was for 'vista' so I did have some confusion
translating where to go in the XP CP.
I have used your tweaks to make XP look/feel like Win2K, so things
are different. I have Network Connections and Network Setup Wizard.
I peeked and poked around and never found a 'sharing' tab. The
Network Setup Wizard is truly scary; at least to me reading the choices
I see. I think I understand why noobs have so much trouble setting
up their first 'network!'
Do not recall anything but read the windows. 3 hours, a system restore
back to yesterday, and, a re-patch of latest WinUpdates, I'm back to
happy camper.
Open my Network Connections, and still see:
Internet Gateway (Internet Connection) **
LAN or High-Speed Internet (Local Area Connection)
Wizard (New Connection Wiz, Network Setup Wiz)
** This item is viewed on this PC (ofc) only. It connects to my
router/Gateway via both of my switches.
I completed WinUpdates to all my other client PC's yesterday.
None of the other PC's display this 'Internet Gateway' in their
Network Connections window.
I am now waiting for Rod Sterling to announce the "Twilight Zone."
LOL!
I'm now thinking about shutting every thing down and pulling all
the power cords from their power source. Wait 15 minutes. Start
over!
Thanks,
Duncan

Josh,
OK. Given I still run XP, what might I look for and kill
to de-feature myself of ICS? All of my clients KNOW
who/where to real Internet Gateway is....Router...... :(
Well, this I accept ATM.
I could be grossly wrong!
I suspect I do not need this feature in my wired format.
But, I could be wrong.
What I see is one XP client that has a new 'business'
living happily in my /Network Connections/ area.
I find this odd. Makes no sense to me ATM.
Just another class I must have slept though!!!!!!
Best,
Duncan

ICS is part of windows since XP days AFAIK. A "feature" for those with one
Internet connection and multiple pc's that don't have a NAT router for some
reason.
Not sure that's what you are seeing, just seemed likely given the
description and the fact that you are poking around network settings.

Josh,
Thank you. Now, where might ICS be hidden in WinXP?
Service? Application? Baddie?
Should I find 'IT', I would so quickly disable this
business for sure!
I do not wish my main office machine to be an 'Internet Gateway!'
Believe I already have one of these. I call it my Router!

Sounds like you have internet connection sharing enabled on that pc.

I have a PC client [ofc] that seems to have something installed on it
that promotes it to an "Internet Gateway" in the NetCon window.
I see a new entry when I check my Network Connections. The confusing part
is that I can NOT Disable this item. It has been running for ~3 hours +.
If I restart in SaveMode, the "Internet Gateway" business is not present.
I can suspect virus, but ESET, MWB, and SpyBot find zero.
Yes, today it IS raining! .......... :)
Ideas?
