Joe,
You scoped into my backup plan. I see that Secunia 2.0 seems
to be blind to IE6 (which I do know is now installed; well the 3
KBs IE8 put back). Really nothing more. I'm just asking the
question, based on observational confusion.

Personally, I have never seen, suspected, or experienced any
trouble using IE8 on XPpro.

I am just now sharing observations after I re-act to the "Collectives"
NO Win IE8 Browser. I am trying to follow what I am told and
reporting back with observations.
You got it!

It can be but with much work and issue IIRC. Why can't you just leave ie8 on it?

Josh,
I get this. I still recall your caustic reply to me about this many
years back!
My current understanding is that the base XP IE6 can NOT be removed from XP.
It is a base part of XPpro. (?)
I have avoided any diddle surgery in XP. Sorry. Solid, so far.
I avoided diddle surgery in Win2K also. Sorry. Always solid.
Win98se was the home doctor's paradise! Perhaps why we rebuilt
our machines so often!
