[H] Cloning the HD

I got my Sammy 830 256GB (it comes with a game, Norton Ghost v15, and a 
usb-to-sata thingie).

I don't want to reinstall everything on my laptop.  I want to clone the 
320 GB HDD and keep it has it is for a few weeks (to ensure the SSD 
won't crash)...then I will use it as a backup for the SSD.

Can you clone a HDD with a 284GB partition to an SSD with a much smaller 
partition?  I thought the new partition had to be the same size or 
larger....
