Yeah, the first gen Patriot Torqx drives of that era were based on the Indilinx controller. Garbage. No surprise they failed, and no shock that it would make you think twice about SSDs going forward.

Anything based on the first gen Indilinx controllers (e.g., OCZ Vertex 1) were garbage. We bought around 50 of them at work, and I think they've almost all failed. The Intels have been rock solid (one failure out of around 50, and all data was recoverable), and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable with Marvell or Samsung based drives either. I'm still a little wary on SandForce after seeing a number of reports, but they're infinitely better than the Indilinx-based drives. Intel qualified them for their new 520 SSD, but only after a year of validation and custom firmware. I bought the Vertex3 for $359, which seemed like a good deal, but if I went cheaper they had the Petrol 120gb for $129, which was pretty tempting. This is the third ssd. My first two died quick unrecoverable deaths which soured me on it. Cost+reliability weren't there. But with costs now and performance it was worth reconsidering. One of the G2's made it to my HTPC, the other is for bench builds. Both of my work systems are on Intel G2 SSDs too--I can't imagine using a system without one. Ugh! Newegg is running a sale on Crucial M4's today for just over $1/GB on 64, 128, and 256GB versions. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Anthony Q.
