Thane,
I think I have your point. But, why do we allow the purveyor of the OS to operate as the 3rd party who determines what s/w, apps, anyone chooses to use with their new OS? And, why should we allow MS to 'catalog' whatever s/w, apps, WE choose to use with their OS?
ATM, this reads a bit heavy-handed by MS and Win8.

I remain open to alternate points. Personally, I have no plan to even try out Win8; just because of its' fixation on all of out 'modern' technology. Some of us relatively happy MS folk just wish to be left alone. I so see MS's direction and their push. I am not convinced that I wish MS to become my
new 'Net Nanny.' Not when they now totally 'run' my machine.

Please forgive my ignorance in this discussion; I do NOT run multiple OS on any of my PC's; so I remain somewhat backward still............even while agreeing to try and live with Win7...... :)
Just thinking.

I see the privacy issue, but that's the downside of security for people who don't want to be responsible to figure out if an application is safe, they have to give information to a third party to figure it out for them. I think this might be a good idea, if MS does a good job of tracking the crap/mal-ware out there.
