Thanks Anthony,
The Gen I5 is where I planned to look first! I plan to focus on 'Sandy Bridge', but this omission
will lead to more difficulty, I'm sure.

For value, I don't think you can go wrong with the late gen i5.

I've had 4 years of perfect service from my 3 C2D E8400 cpus; with the exception of

Yes, all 3 of these cpus ran 24/7. All 3 of them loafed along at 3.0GHz.
All 3 of these cpus live in an ASUS P5Q3 DDR3 m/b.

Perhaps it is time to upgrade these three machines yet again. Fine.

Is there a 'sweet spot' in the Intel line of I5/7 series of cpus ATM?

Plan to keep:
nVidia 5900 GT (driver 306.23w) video cards (3).
For the moment, Windows XP pro (3).
Default 3.0GHz cpu speed.

I plan to look at Asus and Intel m/b's.

Opinions, suggestions, links, whatever welcome. "Best-bang-4-buck" is not a
serious consideration. Reliability over time is.
