I've had no issues with Remote Desktop if the machines are accessible on
the same network, Remote Desktop is enabled and the firewall is opened
for it. Can you telnet to port 3389 on the laptop (first locally, then
remotely)?
If the laptop is a corporate machine, RD could be disabled by policy.
There's not really an easy way around that other than using another
remote control product.
Team Viewer generally just works without having to configure the system
in my experience.
