I almost can't look at older Dell monitors anymore--the ones based on IPS or PVA panels (i.e., their better displays) have a very aggressive anti-glare coating that makes white areas appear to sparkle. The latest one (U2713HM) is tolerable in that it has a lighter coating, but I've already moved on. I recently purchased an Asus PB278Q and like it quite a bit. It's a PLS-based (Samsung's version of LG's IPS) display with a light anti-glare that doesn't suffer from the same effect. It has a PWM backlight dimmer though, so if you don't run brightness fairly high or are sensitive to PWM dimming, it may not be the best bet. The ViewSonic VP2770-LED and the Samsung S27A850D are based on the same panel and do not use PWM, but have more input lag and cost $100 more.
Anything less than 2560x1440 on a 27" makes the pixels look nearly as big as pegs on a Lite Brite (figuratively of course). It's actually the sweet spot--2560x1600 on 30" displays has a lower pixel density than a 27" at 2560x1440. Thanks to the light AG and pixel density, the improvement in text sharpness between it and my older Dell 24" 1920x1200 was dramatic.
