X10 was wonderfully hackable, but cheaply built, poorly designed, and
unreliable.

With Zwave (and perhaps Insteon) we have much better designed and
reliable systems, but now the barriers are proprietary APIs, expensive
development kits, and NDAs. Still, progress is being made to make them
hackable. (See OpenZware.)
