One easy solution is to prevent SMTP access to end-user IPs, which just means all mailing list users need to use their ISPs SMTP server, or not have a hostname that appears as end-user (ie. ppp038.someisp.com). Mate set it up on our email server, and spam disappeared almost overnight. Alternatively, turn on moderation or only allow members to post to the list.
