I've tested the same font (Roboto, attached to a previous email) using the ex-sdl-freetype-harfbuzz demo, and I'm seeing the same results there.
Should you wish to take a look for yourself, the font point size is 9*64, and the DPI used is 96 (these are controlled by the ptSize, device_hdpi, and device_vdpi variables at the top of main).
