That being said...doing so in a portable and platform independent way is actually HARDER in Java than in C (and by C I mean C/C++/Objective-C...whatever). Read the Sable paper... you'll see what I mean :-)

I'll certainly read the paper, but I find it difficult to believe that it is harder to implement portability with Java than with C++, given the latter's notorious "holes" in the spec that produce incompatibilities between different compilers and libraries using the same code.
