THE TYRANTS AND THE JEWS - THE CASE OF JOSEPH STALIN.
The new book by Alexander Rashin "Why didn't Stalin murder all the Jews?"
(March, 2003, Liberty Publishing House, NY) suggests that both answers
might pertain to this greatest tyrant. Stalin's last campaign, known as the
Doctors' Plot, might have resulted in the extermination of 2 to 4 million
Jews in the Soviet Union alone and in the completion of Hitler's "Final
Solution". This year marks the 50th anniversary of the abrupt ending of
that campaign by Stalin's mysterious collapse into a fatal coma exactly on
the Jewish holiday of Purim.
Rashin, who is a scientist, searched further along the avenue of 'human
events'. What was the course of events? Who did what and to what ends? Was
Stalin's collapse on Purim just a coincidence? Rashin's meticulous quest,
focusing on 1953 but touching over five decades, produced the most
comprehensive but compact analysis of books, articles, theories, memories
and rumors. It suggested that most 'revelations' about the events were
orchestrated by the KGB and should be carefully re-examined. The book does
it with surprising results.
Rashin offers an unexpected but coherent theory consistent with the facts.
Stalin was enraged by his failure to make Israel one of his puppets in
1948, and Zionism became his major avowed enemy along with the "American
imperialism". His last campaign aimed at re-staging the great purges of the
1930s and at taking control of Israel to use its army against the US in the
Middle East.
His henchmen learned about the impending arrests and had no choice but to
poison Stalin as indicated by the reported unusual hemorrhages in all
internal organs. They did it at the last moment - on Purim!
The book is a good read, ranging from tragic to hilarious, from
skeptical to spiritual, from personal to global. It is well structured,
punctuating compact historical analysis by fragments of a dramatic personal
line and stories directly told by ordinary Soviet Jews and reflecting their
attitudes to their Jewishness and country.
