Is the story The Laughter of Akiva (1980) which morphed into the novel The Cannibal Galaxy (1983)? There are several anthologies of her short stories and I wish I could tell you precisely which anthology this story is in. It was first published in the New Yorker. By the way: Ozick is one of my favorite writers.

It is set in the Mid West and tells the story of a Day School. Does anyone recognize this story and if so are you able to tell the title? I would sincerely appreciate it.
