A FEW FROM AFAR is an absorbing study of a number of Jewish immigrants who
became accepted into the life of Van Diemen's Land and Tasmania.

Published by the Hobart Hebrew Congregation as a contribution to the
celebration of the Bicentenary of European settlement in 1803-04, this
highly readable narrative gives valuable insights into the cultural
interactions between the non-Anglo-Celtic Jews (both religious and secular)
and the predominantly British Tasmanians.

In every period of Tasmanian history, the small numbers of Jews who reached
this farthest shore experienced safety, tolerance and equal opportunity. In
return, the newcomers invested their talents in the general community, and
immediately benefited the island State. In Tasmania, Jews have never been
'strangers and sojourners'.

The book has been compiled from the work of a wide range of contributors.
It contains a number of historically significant illustrations; maps
indicating the places of departure from Europe and eventual settlement in
South-East Australia of the Jews featured; an annotated bibliography, and
comprehensive endnotes. As a most useful contribution to both Australian
Jewish history and Tasmanian social history, it will be read with enjoyment
by scholar and layman alike.
