Dear Colleagues,
I would like to add my "two-cents" to last week's discussion of book
reviews in connection with the book A Little Piece of Ground" . As a book
reviewer for Library Journal (for both Judaica and health science books)
for many years, (under the by-line Carol Glatt) I can definitively say
that any book review, however negative, generates more interest in a book
than no review at all. Parenthetically, this is true for movie reviews as
well--negative reviews oftentimes bring audiences flocking to the theaters.

If Amazon--a commercial enterprise-- doesn't list the book, it means that
someone there has decided that few sales can be expected for it. In this
case, I believe that it behooves us to also ignore the book also
--certainly for the time being. If the major review organs--PW, Kirkus
Reviews, School Library Journal, etc do publish positive reviews, then is
the time to take action. In my opinion, it is extremely counter-productive
to initiative publicity for a book that is still (and may continue to
remain) relatively unknown.
