BROTHER CAN YOU RAISE A MILLION?
Money Flows As Love Grows In Jerusalem
by Shlomo Wexler

You wouldn't think philanthropy would be a joking matter. It
isn't. But sometimes the people trying to raise the money and the people
giving the money find themselves enmeshed in each other's lives in some
very strange ways.
Rabbi Brill is looking for some serious donations for his
growing Yeshiva. He's managed to talk a Modern Orthodox Jewish young man
from Buffalo and an upbeat, wealthy young Jewish woman-about-town from
Syracuse into making some major donations. But there are complications
-- funny, explosive, unnerving complications.
As each character tells his/her story of what goes on behind
the scenes in the world of Jerusalem philanthropy, we begin to
understand
that charity is both a wonderful virtue and a serious business. Even the
matchmaker has trouble balancing the passions of her potential clients
with the rabbinic rivalries of those who stand in her way of making a
great "match".
Much of this tongue-in-cheek story is based on the author's
many years in the rabbinate and his familiarity with every aspect of the
world of Jewish philanthropy. His barbs hit their mark time and again;
as do the cupid's arrows he shoots at his not-so-willing targets.
The author has opened a window on a fundamental area of Jewish
life that, until now, has been closed to the public.
