If you are sometimes perplexed about what makes a children's book of Jewish content outstanding, a new brochure is available to help you separate the extraordinary from the ordinary. It is called EXCELLENCE IN JEWISH CHILDREN'S LITERATURE: A GUIDE FOR BOOK SELECTORS, REVIEWERS, AND AWARD JUDGES and it was created by an SSC task force of librarians experienced in book evaluation: Cheryl Banks, Ellen Cole, Lisa Silverman, and Linda Silver. The double sided brochure addresses such Jewish content issues as accuracy, age-appropriateness, authenticity, depth of Jewish content, positive focus and values, and sensitivity to Jewish concerns. It also identifies literary and artistic criteria applicable to all children's books, whether or not they are Jewish. An attractive printed brochure is available for distribution at conferences, writers' groups, library meetings, children's literature classes, etc. as well as to publishers, journals and magazines that review children's books, and children's literature journals.
