(21737) $55.00 Joseph Sherman, winner of the 2002 MLA prize for Yiddish translation, offers a close examination of the recurring treatment of the myth of the Jewish Pope in four Yiddish texts produced between 1602 and 1958 (The Mayse-Bukh, "R. Shimen Barbun the Rabbi of Mainz," by Ayzik-Meirr-Dik, "Der yidisher poypst: historishe dertseylung," by Y.Y. Trunk and "Zeydlus der erster," by I.B. Singer.) The myth that one day a Jewish apostate might come to rule the world as Pope derives from the ambiguities in the Biblical story of Joseph in Egypt.
