When Shmuel Foiglman, a Yiddish poet and Holocaust survivor living in Paris, sends his poems to a professor of Jewish history in Tel Aviv, he sets in motion a series of events that effect a long-delayed confrontation between two estranged parts of Jewish culture. Aharon Megged, whose works have been translated into Spanish, French, Romanian, Russian, Italian and German, was born in Poland, and came as a boy of six to Tel Aviv, where he lives today. A kibbutz member for 12 years, Megged worked in agriculture, fishing and at the Haifa docks. He has been a literary editor and journalist, the Israeli cultural attach� in London, and a member of the Academy of Hebrew Language since 1980. From 1980-87 he was the president of the Israeli center of PEN. Over the years, his novels, short stories, childrens stories, plays and novellas have garnered him the Bialik Prize, the Brenner Prize, the Agnon Prize and many other literary awards. In May 2003, he was honored with Israels ultimate accolade the coveted Israel Prize.
