Marion Stein asks for some help in converting LC to Dewey, or at least in
acquiring Dewey nos. for "Judaica books that are scholarly in nature". It
seems to me that the easiest thing to do is to look up the books in the
LC's own online catalogue and click on the "Full Record" tab once the book
has been located. This will yield a lot of details on cataloguing the book,
including the Dewey no. designated by LC.
For eg., I looked up James A. Diamond's "Maimonides and the hermeneutics
of concealment; deciphering scripture and midrash in 'The guide of the
perplexed'" (Albany: State University of New York Press, 2002). Clearly
this is an 'academic' work! in the "full record", LC gives the Dewey
classification as "181/.06 21", compared to LC's "BM545.D35 D53 2002".
Good hunting!
