Sudden Rain/Plutsemdiker Regn
by Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath
Sudden Rain ("Plutsemdiker Regn"), a new bilingual book of Yiddish poetry,
is the remarkable debut of a young American-born poet, Gitl
Schaechter-Viswanath.
Each page of the book presents the Yiddish original on the right and its
English translation on the left. Ms. Schaechter-Viswanath's poems are
inspiring, polished commentaries on contemporary life in the late 20th
century, on a variety of topics ranging from relationships, creativity,
computers and the foam of the sea to a young woman's response to September
11th.
The lyrical English translations by Dr. Jeffrey Shandler, professor of
Jewish Studies at Rutgers University, and the poet Zackary Berger are
themselves self-contained poems that sensitively convey the meaning, rhyme
and rhythm of the Yiddish original.
The book also features an in-depth introduction by Dr. Sheva Zucker, author
of the popular textbook Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language,
Literature and Culture.
Published by Israel Book Publishing House (Tel-Aviv) in 2003, the book is a
softcover edition, totalling 128 pages, including 92 pages of poetry, eight
pages of Yiddish introduction and seven pages of English introduction. The
ISBN number is 965-430-050-8.
Sudden Rain would be a wonderful addition to any library and a delightful
gift to anyone who enjoys poetry, or who is eager to support a new
generation of talented Yiddish writers.
