----------------------- Message requiring your approval ---------------------- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [ha-Safran]: Recommendation for an Author Visit
Dear Colleagues & Friends:
I have noticed that people frequently submit postings to Hasafran asking for recommendations for author visits. Since we had such an incredibly positive experience bringing in author Lesléa Newman to our synagogue's book fair, I feel compelled to share my thoughts with you.
Lesléa Newman was the author-in-residence for the 7th Annual Temple Israel Book Fair, December 7-10, 2003, in West Bloomfield, Michigan. During the course of her 3-day visit, she participated in the following synagogue programs and gave several presentations:
· Facilitated two discussions of A Letter to Harvey Milk with members of the adult book clubs.
· Presented a lecture, "The Writing on the Wall: On Being a Jewish Writer, A Lesbian Writer, and a Jewish-Lesbian Writer" at the annual Sisterhood Chanukah Luncheon followed by a book signing.
· Led a discussion and writing workshop about eating disorders and body image for 75 high school girls.
· Presented a teacher in-service for members of the Early Childhood Center staff on "Heather's Mommy Speaks Out" utilizing slides and video clips.
· Presented a community-wide lecture and reading, "Out of the Closet & Nothing to Wear" followed by a book signing.
· Gave five 20-minute presentation using Runaway Dreidel, Cats, Cats, Cats, Dogs, Dogs, Dogs, and Pigs, Pigs, Pigs to 3-5 year old children and their parents, followed by a book signing.
Lesléa’s presentations were well prepared, beautifully presented, interesting, and insightful. We received only positive feedback from all of her audiences. We have never had a visiting author that was capable of presenting so many different programs to so many different groups within our community. Whether addressing adults, high school students, or nursery school students, Lesléa was able to capture her audience and hold their attention; answering questions with grace and candor. She was a pleasure to work with – very warm, personable, professional, flexible, and generous with her time. And, during the course of her visit, we sold over 200 copies of her books, which was a wonderful fundraiser for our institution.
