Andrew Leach
A & S / B o o k s

The Viennese-Jewish architect Frederick H. Newman (Vienna 1900-Wellington 64) worked in Austria, France and the USSR before moving to New Zealand at the end of the 1930s as a refugee. There, through his work in industrial architecture and social housing, he became a key figure for the introduction of modernity to New Zealand architectural culture.

The book presents a dossier of Newman's essays and lectures on the architect's place in society, as well as a collection of images from his private archive describing his work in Europe and New Zealand. This book is the first publication devoted to the figure and his work.
