Amazon is not a member of your community and gives nothing back to your community. Amazon has no institutional memory. Amazon can't get you all the books from the Jewish Publishing Houses that don't bother to use ISBNs. >> You are so very right! Many Judaica shops are on the verge of going out of business. They cannot compete with the Amazons and Borders, yet they will carry a full line of Jewish books that the others won't...because there isn't enough profit in them--ever notice that Amazon doesn't carry kippot or mezuzot? Once a Judaic shop closes down, there will be no other to take it's place...you will just have to travel farther to the next one. There are numerous recourses for Jewish books, religious items, music and novelties within OUR community..if you don't support them, who will.
