The following message is being posted to several lists. Please excuse duplication. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Israel Union List (ULI) has been upgraded to a new version.
The old ULI was a brief-record master index to the holdings of the participating libraries. The conversion of most of the libraries to standard MARC format in recent years has resulted in much greater uniformity which allows us to now create a union catalog with full cataloging records. The new ULI is designed to accept records both from Aleph-500 and Aleph-300. It is also capable of accepting records from systems other than Aleph which we hope will bring additional libraries into the project. The new catalog contains 'browse' indexes by author and title, as well as several keyword indexes (including now keywords in subject headings). All the subsets of the old ULI have been carried over to the new one, with the exception of the ULITAU subset - since Tel-Aviv University now has a single bibliographic file there is no need for a combined ULI subset. For all libraries with local Web OPACs the ULI records link to the local OPACs, both Aleph-300 and Aleph-500. The new ULI will serve also as the source of copy cataloging for libraries in aleph-500. Network member libraries with Aleph-500 can copy full records from ULI to their local catalogs by registering their cataloger usernames with ULI. Network libraries still in Aleph-300 will be able to use an special version of ULI to copy records created by libraries already in Aleph-500.
