Yesterday we had a speaker, Joani Keller Rothenberg, whom I would like to
recommend to anyone looking for a program on Jewish childrens books.

Joani has illustrated three Jewish childrens books (Cain and Abel, The
Shabbat Angels, and Adam and Eve's first sunset). She is currently working
on illustrations for a Reconstructionist children's prayer book. She is
also an art therapist.

Her program is "Creating modern midrash through art". She talked to a group
of adults about her illustrations, how the creative process between author,
publisher, and illustrator developed the pictures, and the Jewish values
she strives to convey.

The highlight of our event was when Joani read the story "Adam and Eve's
first sunset" to a group of children that joined the group towards the end.
They discussed afterwards the themes from the book: what were Adam and Eve
afraid of, what did Adam and Eve do when they were afraid; what are you are
afraid of, and what can you do. The adults were engrossed in the dynamics
of the discussion!
