This is not a suggestion for a novel, but rather a true story - if someone is making up a bibliography you might choose to include this recommendation.
Where do you go for help if you are in an emergency situation away from home, either in the US or abroad? Everyone knows to contact the American Consulate abroad, but there is another excellent place for help, in this country or elsewhere. It is your nearest religious institution. (Don't feel bad if you didn't get the answer - in over 3 years, only one person thought of it.) Several years ago, my husband and I went to Europe on a tour; he had an unexpected heart attack which he did not survive. I contacted the synagogue in Florence, and was comforted and reassured by the Rabbi that nothing would be done at the Funeral Home that wojld be unacceptable to Jews. And he sent a lovely lady who located for me the consulate and a bank. Since this isn't something that quickly comes to mind, I include the suggestion with the hope that no one would ever need it.
