Hi everyone. I have a question about the best method for barcoding books
for check out.

I am automating my library for the first time, using Surpass Software. I
had my records go through retrospective conversion, and have received a big
fat package full of barcodes for my books. I plan to get the books
barcoded this summer.

Up until now, patrons have checked out books by filling out a card that
resides in a book pocket on the inside back cover of each book, and leaving
the card in a box at my desk. This allows them to borrow books without the
circulation desk being staffed. As I am the only staff the library has,
this is very important. I don't want to have to teach patrons how to use
my computer to check themselves out, so I'm thinking the best thing to do
is to put the barcode stickers onto the check out cards rather than on the
books themselves. As a back-up, I can write the barcode number on the
title page, in case the check out card gets lost. This way, I can wand in
the barcodes on the cards later when I'm back at the desk.

Does this make sense? How do other libraries handle this situation?

Thanks! Heidi Estrin
