Great News!

The long anticipated personal memoir by Mark Hasten, survivor, Jewish
fighter and leader, is now in print.

Published by Brotchin Books, this 420 page hardbound, illustrated history
chronicles an amazing life brilliantly depicted against a backdrop of
twentieth century Jewish history.

>From his beginnings in a Polish shtetl, to his flight from the Nazis across
Russia to Kazakhstan, to his service in the Polish Army during the
liberation of Warsaw we witness a strong, defiant character being forged.
Languishing in the DP camps of Europe, Mark fell in with the Irgun
underground as a freedom fighter against British Mandate rule in Palestine,
finally reaching the new state of Israel aboard the ill-fated Altalena.

His odyssey took him through valiant service in the IDF during the War of
Independence and eventually led him, distraught and disillusioned, back
among the displaced of Europe. Starting a new life as he arrived to the
shores of Canada, Mark focuses on the immigrant experience and how he
managed to rebuild his life in the new land. Working first as an inventive
engineer for General Mills, Mark eventually joined the family nursing home
business that led to an industry-topping career in banking and finance.

Through it all, Mark maintained his stalwart sense of Yiddishkeit and his
deep-seated religious convictions. These convictions caused him to involve
himself ever more deeply in the area of Jewish education both as a founder
of the Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis and through his presidency of
Touro University.

Its a saga of unrelenting humor and joy in the face of extremely tragic
conditions. According to Rabbi Berel Wein:

"This book is a fascinating account not only of Mark Hasten's life but of
the story of the Jewish people in the twentieth century. Even though the
book is about an individual and his struggle to survive and prosper, the
author has painted this story on the much broader canvas of Jewish life and
history. It is a book well worth reading."
