Shalom safranim ve-safraniyot,

I am looking for the original citation of Mokher Sforim's "breath with one
nostril", referring to Jews choosing Hebrew or Yiddish as the national
Jewish language. This quotation is mentioned in Shmuel Niger's
"Bilingualism in the history of Jewish literature" (Lanham, Md.: University
Press of America, c1990: 120) without a precise citation, and I can't find
it. I've looked at Baron's A Treasury of Jewish Quotations (1956) and other
quotation titles, and browsed the Leksikon fun der nayer Yidisher literatur
under Mendele entry. Can anybody help?

Thanks,
Hag sameakh,

Rachel Leket-Mor
