The Jewish National and University Library, David and Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project, is pleased to announce the addition of a fourth title to its Historic Hebrew Newspapers website: the newspaper Hazefirah (Warsaw and Berlin, 1862-1931).
Hazefirah, edited initially by Hayim Zelig Slonimski and later by Nahum Sokolow, appeared intermittently during this period, part of the time as a weekly and part as a daily newspaper. Although initially a journal of world news and science, under Sokolow's editorship Hazefirah became strongly identified with the Zionist movement. The Hazefirah site contains images of over 45,000 pages (over 9200 issues), arranged by date. Unfortunately there is as yet no comprehensive index to Hazefirah. Indexes appeared with several volumes and these are presented together at the site. Address of the Historic Hebrew Newspapers website: http://jnul.huji.ac.il/dl/newspapers/ The runs of these journals are based primarily on the collection of the JNUL, with missing issues filled in with the help of other institutions. A few issues are still missing or partial and we welcome the help of other institutions in filling these gaps.
