The Haaretz English Language Edition contains an article dated August 1,
2004, entitled "Biblioteque Hebrew archivist held for mass theft".
The article begins: "The head of the French National Library's
Hebrew-language archives has been arrested on suspicion of destroying or
stealing irreplaceable books and documents he was responsible for, the
French newspaper Liberation reported yesterday. According to a prosecution
source, 'many dozens, perhaps hundreds, of documents were either mutilated
or disappeared completely' from the shelves of the famous Biblioteque
nationale de France. The suspect, Michel Garel aged 58, has headed the
Hebrew archives since 1980 and was arrested on Thursday following a
clandestine investigation which began in March. Garel told the court this
week-end that he was innocent on all charges except forging certificates of
authentication so as to sell one of the works at a public auction at
Christie's. The sale in 2000 brought in $300,000."
