The discussion that goes on for some time in this group is a very important
and principal one in our profession. It has to do not only with children
literature, but with adult fiction that gets outdated, with reference books
and with journal, which take a very large space on the library shelves. How
long do we have to keep old journals? I know in Great Britain the British
Library had found a very good solution to this to this problem that bothers
every librarian. They have a place near the city of York, where there is a
huge library. Every library can send to them the books which they don't need
or books that are rarely used. They keep 3 copies of every title. The others
are destroyed. Every library is entitled to borrow from them in interlibrary
loan, if the book is needed. If an article is needed it could be purchased
via e mail. I tried to initiate such a program in Israel, but was not
successful. I am certain such a project is much needed. Not only for
historical research but to make our libraries more efficient and to save
money.
