CPSO has approved my proposal to establish the term "Hoshen Mishpat" as a 150 topical heading in the subject authority file (sh2004-005635). The heading should be used for works dealing collectively with the subject matters covered in the "Hoshen Mishpat" sections of the Shulhan Arukh or the Arba'ah Turim, such as hiddushim or responsa about those subjects that are discussed in the Tur's Hoshen Mishpat. Since the group of subjects included in the Tur have frequently been used as the basis for other author's writings (including but hardly limited to R. Karo's Bet Yosef/Shulhan Arukh), that group of subject should be a 150 topical heading (650 in bib records).
In the past, most of us have been making an author-title subject heading for R. Yosef Karo's "Hoshen Mishpat", which is appropriate only if the book being cataloged is a commentary on R. Karo's work. I hope to change the bibliographic file in the foreseeable future (I'll look for records with a 600 for the Shulhan Arukh, but not a 700). If there are any questions, please feel free to email me. --Aaron Aaron Wolfe Kuperman (LC, Social Sciences Cataloging Division,Law team) This note is NOT an official communication from the Library of Congress.
