I have three suggestions for a Jewish novel. The Edge of Darkness, written by Avraham Tzuri (CIS Publishers) and The Persecution (Mesorah Publications, Ltd.) by Chaim Eliav, take place in Spain and Portugal, respectively, before the Inquisition. A newer novel, South African Journeys (Feldheim Publishers/Jerusalem Publications), by Gita Gordon, is set in South Africa, and spans most of the twentieth century. All explore the themes of the reality of Jewish life in these countries. Characters are well-developed and believable, and the action is fast-paced and will hold the reader's interest. Skullcaps and Switchblades, even though it is nonfiction, is a good choice. I hope this helps you.
