Archivist





Description:

Under the guidance and direction of the Head of Bibliographic and 
Information Services, is responsible for the acquisitions, organization, 
cataloguing, maintenance and dissemination of the archives and special 
collections of the Jewish Public Library.  The incumbent also manages 
digital initiatives, provides reference service, processes manuscript 
collections, provides instruction on the use of archival collections, 
promotes the collections and curates exhibits.



Duties:



Organizes and classifies archival collections according to recognized 
archival principles and standards; MARC AMC/APPM format



Maintains the collection in an appropriate manner, recommending 
preservations and conservation methods and procedures as appropriate and 
necessary;



Develops and maintains plans for potential disasters;



Responsible for coordinating digitization projects involving archival and 
special collections materials, including manuscript collections, rare 
materials and encoding finding aids using RAD.



Provides in-depth reference service in Archives and Special Collections;



Creates and maintains access tools for archival materials, including 
printed and electronic finding aids.



Develops outreach and public programs with the local community such as 
exhibitions, lectures and tours;



Establishes strong relationships with academics, researchers, donors and 
the broader community by creating and/or maintaining communication mechanisms;



Develop and provide library education and instruction where appropriate to 
promote and disseminate information about the Archives and Special Collections.







Qualifications or requirements:


    * Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited 
institution, or approved equivalent education and training acceptable for 
membership in the Corporation of Professional Librarians of Quebec, with a 
concentration in archives.( Or Master of Archival Studies)
    * Experience with archives-related use of the internet and digital 
technologies, including Encoded Archival Description (EAD);
    * Working knowledge or Rules for Archival Description (RAD)
    * Skill in the development of strategies for preparing electronic 
documents for public use
    * Knowledge of standard archival practices and accepted conservation 
methods applied to archival collections of manuscripts, photographic 
materials, and ephemera;
    * Knowledge of MARC formats and their attributes
    * Knowledge of Judaic and related academic disciplines
    * Knowledge of the Montreal Jewish Community and its history an asset
    *  Bilingual English and French
    * Yiddish language skills for processing and translating materials in 
the collection
    * Knowledge of Hebrew an asset
    * Certification by Academy of Certified Archivists an asset
    * Ability to communicate effectively and openly with colleagues and 
with diverse public library users
    * Strong written and oral communication skills
    * Commitment to active participation in the library and archival 
professions
    * Ability to work in a team-based environment
