I find myself in a difficult position, and wonder (1) how many others are here with me, and (2) how to deal with the problem. Our synagogue library houses 3 donated computers for recreational use by students and congregants. As the new librarian, I am noticing problems that the synagogue is loathe to deal with, and I imagine this must occur at similar set-ups. The library is open throughout the week, though I, the only employee, am only here very occasionally. The layout of the synagogue is such that none of the full-time staff can oversee the library space -- it's on a different floor from the office -- and we are having a very difficult time monitoring use of the computers. My inclination is to close them down altogether -- they are only rarely used for "research", and largely used for play this new library was built with space specifically set aside for them, and the general thinking is that they are a nice amenity. I agree, but without adequate oversight, the potential for compromising the Temple's entire computer setup is very real. Our official computer maven is a congregant who is doing his work gratis, and he, too, is frustrated with the situation as it now exists.
How do other Temples deal with on-site computer use problems? I would like to avoid a confrontation with the Board, but wonder if that is inevitable.
