The Jewish National and University Library, David and Fela Shapell Family Digitization Project, is pleased to announce the addition of a fifth title to its Historic Hebrew Newspapers website: the newspaper Hameliz (Odessa and St. Petersburg, 1860-1904)
Hameliz, edited initially by Alexander Zederbaum and later by the poet Yehuda Leib Gordon, was the organ of the Russian maskilim and early 'Hoveve Tsiyon' such as Ahad Ha-Am and Moshe Leib Lilienblum. The Hameliz site contains images of over 33,000 pages (over 5600 issues), arranged by date. Unfortunately, as with Hazefirah, there is as yet no comprehensive index to Hameliz. Indexes appeared with several volumes and these are presented together at the site. Address of the Historic Hebrew Newspapers website: http://jnul.huji.ac.il/dl/newspapers/ The runs of these journals are based primarily on the collection of the JNUL, with missing issues filled in with the help of other institutions. Particular thanks are due to The Dorot Jewish Division, The New York Public Library for providing microfilm of an entire missing year. A few issues are still missing or partial and we welcome the help of other institutions in filling these gaps. They will be added in the coming months. The newspaper Hazevi will also be added to the site in the near future. The site itself is entirely in Hebrew.
