I received the following message from Cheryl Banks, & I am sending my reply
to the list because she might not be the only one who wondered about my
choices.

So, Rita, what WERE the books you kept? We are ALWAYS looking for good
Israel books for children. Perhaps you could put them on HaSafran?

I hesitate to list the books that we decided to keep, or even those that we
chose to return because our reasons and standards might not be the same for
everybody. Ours is a Reform Temple with a weekly Religious School; a Day
School or an Orthodox Synagogue might have different standards & I
certainly would not want to recommend our decisions to everybody. Decisions
made by me, the Rabbi, and our Educational Director.

Just about every publisher has a series about the countries of the world,
scaled for different age groups. I used the Follett catalog to select these
books, & only purchased those that were published within the previous 2
years. Having verified in advance that they could be returned, we then
previewed and made our selections. I have to add that I don't always agree
with Follett's determination of age suitability, but as an elementary
school librarian, I was familiar with the series used.
