Lori Cahan-Simon did thorough research on this. It is more complicated than
it appears, but I believe she ended up endorsing the theory that Gelbart
wrote the music and words in Yiddish and S.S. Grossman wrote the English
lyrics.

Her email used to be: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Since she couldn't trace it to before 1940, it would still be under
copyright. Unfortunately, the putative composer whom Cahan-Simon does not
endorse was Samuel Goldfarb, who worked for the Board, so it may be that
your organization has traditionally claimed ownership to this work on thin
evidence. The up side is, I believe she has made a thorough enough search
to put you in touch with any heirs to the actual copyright holders.

Best,
